CONDENSER

In my work I am interested in history as a way to place the viewer in the world of the art. To me, historical settings create an amazing feeling of mystery. I want to understand the feelings and motivations of the people who lived in the past. This feeling of mystery is a large part of why I chose to create this series of work. Each piece exposes a frame of the bigger picture. The bigger picture is the efforts of people. Whether they are fighting for their freedom, trying to spread their morals, or just trying to make money, people will always seek to change their world through creation and destruction. The prohibition In the 1920s is the perfect setting to show the struggles and triumphs of these people. Bootleggers, mobsters, smugglers, cops, and every-day people simultaneously strive for their own benefit and mold their life through their works.

The oil paintings and lithography work hand in hand to paint a complete picture of the scene. Lithography is like an X-ray into hidden tones of light and shadow. There is a clarity and quietness that can only be captured in black and white, which and is shown exceptionally well through lithography. While the litho works show the dream-like qualities of tonal light, the oil paintings serve as a window into this imagined world. The paintings will create a space that the viewer can place themselves in, or feel themselves looking into. The two mediums serve as parallel views of the same world.
